SLIP AND FALL INJURIES

Slip and fall injuries can be devastating to mariners and their families.  Unfortunately, they are far too common in the maritime environment due to a number of reasons including poor weather, limited visibility, and slippery surfaces mariners must negotiate.

Vessel owners must ensure slip and fall hazards are recognized and mitigated through Job Safety Analysis policies and practices.

When a mariner is injured in a slip and fall accident, the vessel owner may first blame the mariner and then look to blame others such as a dock or passing vessel. Mariners should not accept responsibility for an incident before consulting with a maritime lawyer.  A competent maritime lawyer can help you understand your rights as a mariner.  Vessel owners understand this and often attempt to pressure a mariner into blaming himself/herself for the incident before the mariner is able to talk to a maritime attorney.

Do not be pressured by vessel owners after an incident.

ADAM'S ADVICE

Report the Injury, Leave Work and Seek Medical Attention

Go to the emergency room or doctor of your own choosing. Do this even if your injuries do not appear severe or life-threatening. You have the right to leave work to see a doctor of your own choosing. Do not go to the doctor or occupational health clinic recommended by your company.
